After interviewing Linda Lingo about divorce, money, long-term marriages, and long-term care, I started thinking of all my clients and their financial footprints. I get to see their financial footprints through their Disclosure forms. My view of women and money is that they’re really good with money. Honestly, as I keep listening to all financial people who like working with women during and after divorce, is that women are more responsible with money than they get credit for.
Some women make less than their spouses, especially if their spouses are men, but the women I see in my office are really responsible with money. I would like to take this opportunity to give women praise for the way they manage their money.
True, we can all spend a little less on small daily indulgences, but with big picture expenditures, I see women handling those credibly. I see women managing the family finances carefully, understanding how to stretch money, and how to live well on less.
Living longer makes it harder to grow old in a marriage together. Linda pointed this out, and I see this, too. There are far fewer 40-year marriages than there were in the dark ages of my youth. As people approach this hallmark and are healthy people, there is a reassessment of how they want to spend the next 20-30 years, with or without Mr. or Mrs. Wonderful. Nothing wrong with choosing a different path if that is what will fulfill the spirit, but how does the money play out? Do both spouses still have to work? Are both spouses equally employable? Can what they earn sustain them? And how is long-term care approached?
Linda’s other point was about choosing a lifestyle that works for this new phase of life. Should the previous lifestyle change to be a lifestyle that is new and different? Ending a long-term marriage is the perfect opportunity to live differently. With life lessons learned, and may experiences used as guides, a brand new lifestyle can be a dream come true. But the money has to be there, the self-worth has to support the value placed on money, and the willingness to change to grow will create the next chapter.
